PAUL R SHANLEY 1931-01-25 02158

Paul R. Shanley is a pivotal figure in the Catholic abuse crisis. The civil suit filed by four of his alleged victims resulted in the largest release of diocesan documents ever achieved, and Shanley's criminal case shaped the Boston crisis and the media's approach to it. Shanley is alleged to have abused dozens if not scores of people, and his victims are unusually disparate and exceedingly damaged. His voluminous files have been sanitized, but they still offer a detailed look at the man and the bureaucracy that fostered his alleged crimes.

Mr. Lopez, Interesting stuff. I'm taking a printed copy for future reference. You sure don't look like a "hate blog" to me. Are you sure your not a threat because your making complete sense? Considering what has been said about me, I suppose that can be misconstrued as an insult. Or maybe my insanity is miraculousy being cured! Maybe you should go back to medical school and become a psychiatrist. I have more faith in you than I do all of our human service workers, mental health professionals, social workers, priests and elected officials. At least you can tell the truth.

Gary why are you upset at workers trying to earn as much as they can? They have families to support as much as the next guy. So people work OT to get more money, everyone does. I bet no one is upset at the DPW workers that have to stay long hours and make sure the roads are clear during a snow or ice storm.

There are many DPW workers earning $80 -!15K.

My point is that historically civil service work paid less, but offered lots of benefits and had lots of job security.

Today civil service workers are the highest paid, and still command all the benefits, including 80% of highest income in retirement benefits.

Many civil service workers are eligible to receive $60,000 a year in retirement for the rest of their lives who haven't hit 50.

These folks go on to second careers.

I see a day in the very near future where most of the perks offered civil service workers no longer exist.

I see a day in MASSACHUSETTS when unions are COMPLETELY ignored by the state, cities, towns, and the country.

Take a look at what the legislature did to the unions who strongly supported the Governor's Casino bill.

DiMasi told the unions to go stick it.

The bill to authorize flagmen to replace police detials WILL PASS and BE SIGNED BY THE GOVERNOR, within five months.

Beacon Hill just told the police union to go stick it.

You can't have it both ways.

Check out how many DPW employees, including Wastewater Pollution, earned more than $85,000 last year.

Most of these jobs are entry level jobs that don't even require a high school diploma.

All DPW jobs have to be done with one hand, because I've never seen a DPW worker without a cup of coffee or a soda in one of his hands.

Check out Centerville Plaza any weekday moring between 7:00AM and noon.

There are more town vehicles parked there than personal cars.

Greed got us where we are and it will see the end of this society. Just remember that not only do the police and fire fighters who CHOOSE to remain in the military reserves get paid to do their reserve duty, they also now get paid by the fire departments to do that two week stent double dipping on the taxpayers. I'm very supportive of our police, fire and military but I abhor greed and the way I see it getting as much as you can is greed. I say again its unsustainable. Watch when the unions are busted. How many of the current employees will be noble and work anyway. We live in a different country.

"Check out how many DPW employees, including Wastewater Pollution, earned more than $85,000 last year. Most of these jobs are entry level jobs that don't even require a high school diploma"

Wastewater Pollution? Entry Level? There are 3. They are Plant Operators. They have many technical licenses. They are on call to respond when things break. They are far away from entry level. Try to get a Wastewater License. Try to get facts before making general statements.

Oh, just so you know DPW employees need a high school dipoma. Half of them that drive large trucks need a Class A or B CDL license. And since they have a A or B license they are subject to random Drug and Alcohol testing.

Yup, just a bunch of ants. Typical sterotype.

Since Gary is having fun (and I think that's who I'm replying) to I would like to comment on this.
"Many civil service workers are eligible to receive $60,000 a year in retirement for the rest of their lives who haven't hit 50."
Wow, I wish this were true for me. I'm a 51 year old DPW worker with 23 years of service and if I retired today I would get 25.3% of my pay. That (from your list) would be about $15,000. Whoopee. Where's that deal? I'll relocate!

Don't get me wrong. I come to this site everyday. I enjoy the info but had to respond to a couple of mistakes I saw since COG does operate on the truth, as far as I can tell.

To Cape Cod Richie:

Look, for the most part, no one here is taking whacks at the DPW, believe me. I have respect for those guys, including Mark Ells, whom I know personally and like and respect. I think the major beef with most people is the major WASTE that is coming from our town Manager John Klimm. As it is likely that you live here and pay taxes as we all do, the major bitch, like I said is Klimm's waste, and HIS TAKING CARE of his MANY PALS and likely the PALS of other people....... It is obvious!

Look at the "Growth Management Dep't. John Klimm conveniently allowed that dep't to be INVENTED for a boatolad of friends. Look at the Town Attorney's Office. Here, let me remind you and others that the TOWN HAS SIX highly PAID Attorney's who do virtually NOTHING! And yes, I said, NOTHING!

Last July I TRIED to obtain from the Town MANAGER and the TOWN ATTY and the TOWN FINANCE DIRECTOR the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION on how much THE TAXPAYERS here have had to PAY for OUTSIDE LAW FIRMS!!! It is a LOT, trust me, Richie, whoever you are..........

And I GOT THE MAJOR RUNAROUND from the MANAGER, the Town Atty's Office and the Town Finance Director.... The case is STILL with the MA agency which handles these investigations. And sooner or later we WILL get that information!

So here we have a Town Manager who has been WASTING MILLIONS of taxpayer money and we are all getting ripped blind by a bunch of incompetent supposed 'local gov't leaders". It is sickening.

Now add to that the MAJOR OVERASSESSING of property values in Barnstable and NOTHING is being done to reduce the values DOWN where they belong. So we have a MANAGER who could care less. The council could care LESS. Nor does the Town Assessor. So it goes on and on and on........ HONEST, Innocent taxpayers getting WAY overtaxed by these incompetent clowns.

Cape Cod Richie, I suspect YOU and your family have to live WITHIN your means, do you not? MOST everyone I know does. SO WHY shouldn't the STATE and OUR LOCAL TOWN GOV't be any different?

Like it or not, Gary has been trying to HELP EVERYONE with all this for a long time now, and so have I and OTHERS!

Some people WANT to help but are too afraid for fear of retalliation. Gary is not. I am not and othe rpeople are also not. And we plan to continue to TRY to HELP the good honest people here. The WASTE here is sickening and the town charter needs to be changed. So if you care, tell your friends BEFORE they get TAXED out of here.

Trust me, John Klimm has no clue about living within "MEANS" as long as he can continue to EXTRACT the $$$$$$$$$ from taxpayers, and Mr. Klimm did a nice job os STACKING his phonies on the current charter commission so that nothing will change. And yet, Mr. Klimm continues to say he will 'run for mayor' if the town goes to one.

Sure, I would bet the farm on that one. IF this town ever DOES the smart thing and goes to an ELECTED Mayor, the voters here will elect Donal Duck before John Klimm is elected.

So anyone who DOES happen to care, start now. HELP us ALL here with trying to do one simple thing:

FORCE these incompetent clowns who call themselves oyr gov't to LIVE WITHIN THEIR MEANS just like we all have to do. If it continues, MORE and MORE people WILL continue to lose their homes..........

and like I said, NONE of these incompetent so called leaders could care less! EXCEPT for Greg Milne, who is now getting the shaft of his life!

Hey Gary - When are you going to post the answers to your survey? I am dying to know if thespians should be allowed to adopt children!!! : )

The point is that the median income for town employees is about $50,000 (1,484 employees and half is 742).

Median Income is the middle of all incomes sorted from lowest to highest.

Barnstable's Median Household Income is $46,811, that includes the incomes of everyone in the household (typically more than one wage earner).

If you're 51 and worked for the town for 23 years, you didn't start until you were 28.

I know the 80% kicks in after 30 years, and is applied to the highest three years salaries, excluding overtime.

Tommy MacDonald averaged $115,000 for his top three years which put his retirement at $92,000.

Tommy is in his mid-fifties, and can go to work.

Hi John,

Just saw a couple of things that might give people the wrong impression (at least from my point of view). I'm just a lowly worker type. Not anyone important.

Yes, I'm a homeowner in this town and completely agree with what you're saying. My property taxes have quadrupled since moving here in 1987. It's a strange situation for me because I'm paying for my income. I don't work for a division that is an enterprise account.

I love Cape Cod and do my best for my customers-the taxpayers. I hope I can afford to live here when and if I ever get to retire.

I do not have a mortgage, car payments, or a credit card balance. I understand fiscal responsibility ( thank goodness for the Mrs. who does not work a job and handles the $). I am making it barely and I work so much overtime I asked the Mrs. if she wanted me to tattoo my name on my forehead so she'll know who I am when I get to come home (to my Bed and Breakfast).

Thanks to everyone for all your good work in enlightening all of us to the happenings that we don't have time to keep track of, because we're busy working and sleeping.

Richie: Like I said, no one here is going after people like you. You guys are the heart and soul of the town, and people like me know this........ I have a number of friends just like you who work for the town and do good things, and yes, don't make enough. That is because we have a moron for a town manager who pads OUR TAX $$$$$ on paying high salaries on HACKS like Tom Lynch, who John Klimm recently hired and LIED to the Barnstable taxpayers and said he did a "COUNTRYWIDE SEARCH" for Paul Neidzweicki's replacement. Yeah, right. So we WONDER HOW MUCH Mr. Lynch is raking in..........

And then take someone like Lindsay Counsel. No offense but in MY opinion, this guy is a waste and a HALF. He rakes in about 90K a year, and FOR WHAT?! For nothing, that is for what.

Now add to this the SIX Town Attorney's who do nothing........ Then add in the entire "Growth Management Dep't. That entire dep't we can ALL do without.

See, it is the Barnstable TAXPAYERS who suffer and are getting RIPPED blind for this continual waste, but what else is new?

So Richie, like I said, no one here is after you and others in our town who we know are worth every dime of what you make. It is the WASTE. Look at what Dave Curley, the recreation director makes: OVER 90K!!!! And there are THREE guys in "golf" who make $ 84,236 and one makes $ 77,314 and a third makes $ 7130.

In case some might have missed it, John Klimm WASTED MILLIONS to buy the Hyannis Golf Course which we KNOW IS LOSING a lot of money and here we have three guys who are listed in golf as making these HIGH OVERPAID salaries, at taxpayer expense!

As gary has said time and again, this WASTE will continue to chase people the hell out of this good town, plain and simple.

The MANAGER NEEDS TO BE FIRED OR REMOVED or this crap will continue until we are all bankrupt but the 12 idiots on the council are too blind to see this!
